VBBT OPENS REGISTRATION
 |
With 45 paid entries already on the books, the Virginia Beach Billfish Tournament is well on its way to meeting their 75 boat limit.
Up to now the tournament has been open to previous participants only, and we're still getting entries from these invitees, but as of today we're opening up registration on a first-come, first-served basis.

Don't miss your chance to participate in Virginia's best billfish tournament. You can expect, as always, to pit your skills against your angling peers, compete for major cash awards, enjoy memorable evening eats and entertainment and have the satisfaction of knowing that you're supporting some great kids charities.

BLUE MARLIN STUDY
 |
Once again our circle hook proponent, Dr. John Graves of the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences (VIMS), and VBBT participant Dr. Ken Neill got in a trip to Venezuela to tag blue marlin with satellite pop-ups.
We think this photo, courtesy of Ken, ought to be enough to get the juices flowing! |
CIRCLE HOOK REMINDER
 |
The rule regarding circle hooks in billfish tournaments has been in effect since the first of the year, and just to set the record straight, the rule currently reads that an HMS permitted vessel, (you must have an HMS Permit to fish for Atlantic billfish) fishing in a billfish tournament must use non-offset circle hooks with natural bait (and therefore natural/artificial combos).
There is no exception based on leader size, pound-test, big baits or big bait combos. The only place a J-hook can be is on a pure artificial lure or in your tackle drawer. |
RIGGING TIPS!
 |
The waters are warming up and tournament season is here—do you have your circle hook rigs ready to go?
Now is the time to get ready. Need some rigging tips? Most of the magazines are covering rigging options complete with step by step pictures.
NOAA has produced a video we have available to our participants and the discussion boards are loaded with links to videos and tackle tips. Now is the time to try them out!
Here are links to some rigging tips from major magazines:
Marlin: Circle Hook Lure/Bait Combo by Capt. Brad Philipps
Sport Fishing: Building a Better Ballyhoo by Doug Olander
Saltwater Sportsman: Circle the Wagons by George Poveromo
